New York Giants’ Sterling Shepard placed back in...

The New York Giants were expected to have wide receiver Sterling Shepard back on Monday night against the Dallas Cowboys after clearing concussion protocol earlier in the week and taking a full slate of reps in practice.

However, something went awry and the Giants announced on Sunday afternoon that for the third time this season, Shepard has been placed in league-mandated protocol.

“He practiced fully this week and was limited with no contact the two weeks before that,” said coach Pat Shurmur. “He told (Sr. VP Medical Services/Head Athletic Trainer) Ronnie (Barnes) last evening (Saturday) he didn’t feel well and was sent for examination and evaluation. When he arrived for work this morning, he still did not feel well. At that point, the decision was made to continue in the concussion protocol.”

Shepard has suffered two concussions already this season — occurring over the span of just four weeks — missing a total of four games, including each of the past three.

While meeting with the media on Saturday, Shepard said he “felt great” and had no concerns about playing in Week 9.

After weeks of feeling symptom-free, the recurrence of Shepard’s concussion issues could signal more of a long-term problem and potentially even end his season.

With Shepard now out, the Giants will once again be without their full staff on Monday night against the Cowboys.
